Reflections on Skolem's Relativity of Set-Theoretical Concepts!
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper an attempt Is made to present Skolem's argument forthe relativity of some set-theoretical notions as a sensible one. Skolem's critiqueof set theory is seen as part of a larger argument to the effect that no conclusiveevidence has been given for the existence of uncountable sets. Some replies toSkolem are discussed and are shown not to affect Skolem's position, since theyall presuppose the existence of uncountable sets. The paper ends with an assess-mont of the assumptions on which Skolem's argument rests from a present-dayperspective.

Reflections on Skolem’s Paradox
The Löwenheim-Skolem theorems say that if a first-order theory has infinite models, then it has models which are only countably infinite. Cantor's theorem says that some sets are uncountable. Together, these two theorems induce a puzzle known as Skolem's Paradox: the very axioms of (first-order) set theory which prove the existence of uncountable sets can themselves be satisfied by a merely cou...

متن کاملCultural Relativity of Moral Precepts
The foundation of most intellectual discourse is Western-centric to the exclusion of other views. This includes ideal patterns of social interaction, preference for aesthetic, accepted norms and values, and the concepts of dignity, respectability, morality and ethics. Such a position is culturally myopic. Western cultural influence colors all of them including moral precepts. The assumption is ...
متن کاملPoincaré’s Relativistic Physics: Its Origins and Nature
Henri Poincaré (1854–1912) developed a relativistic physics by elevating the empirical inability to detect absolute motion, or motion relative to the ether, to the principle of relativity, and its mathematics ensured that it would be compatible with that principle. Although Poincaré’s aim and theory were similar to those of Albert Einstein (1879–1955) in creating his special theory of relativit...
متن کاملControlling reflections from mesh refinement interfaces in numerical relativity
A leading approach to improving the accuracy on numerical relativity simulations of black hole systems is through fixed or adaptive mesh refinement techniques. We describe a generic numerical error which manifests as slowly converging, artificial reflections from refinement boundaries in a broad class of mesh-refinement implementations, potentially limiting the effectiveness of meshrefinement t...
